Everything You See

Ever since the ‘Run Rig Dance Band’ was formed, many years ago, the band have released a steady flow of albums. And, unlike many bands, almost all these offer completely new material.

It is often easy to tell which era a particular song has come from. Indeed, the band would not be where they are today if they hadn’t changed over the nineteen years they’ve been together. Having said that, early songs, if played today, are radically different to the original versions. Understandably the level of production is vastly improved, but so is the amount of feeling and soul which is placed into the songs.

One of the characteristics of the band is the amount of emphasis placed upon both culture and landscape. Take The Big Wheel, for example. It has a highly ‘European’ feel, with many references to places and regions of the continent, and indeed the world.

Alternatively, Amazing Things has a very cultural feel, as well as a natural and peaceful touch. This is enforced with lyrics like :

There’s a place
Where the rocks of Caithness
Lie beside the ocean
On summer days, a waiting grave
...
And we’ll all be long blown rushes
When all the world’s a flame

Anyone who knows the area of Caithness, together with the full lyrics, understands that the song refers to the nuclear power station at Dounreay, and the hidden threat posed by this ‘wonderful’ nuclear energy.

The Edge Of The World refers to cultures which survive ‘on the edge’ of things. This must have direct reference to some of the islands off Scotland, notably the Barra archipelago, where Gaelic was once a thriving language before the island was “destoyed” in the 19th century. Whilst there are fierce attempts to keep the language in common use, the battle is immense.

No other band, to my knowledge, can offer such diverse lyrics and depth of feeling as Runrig. A lasting impression can be gained from the titles of their songs, in addition to the lyrics.

To this end, I have included on this web site the titles from all the current Runrig albums, along with a small picture of the CD sleeve to help you imagine the music. The lyrics are also available.
